Social Media and How It Affects How We See Ourselves

Social media is a huge part of everyday life now. Most people check their phones constantly throughout the day, sometimes without even realizing it. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat make it really easy to see what everyone else is doing all the time. While social media can be fun and entertaining, it also has a big impact on how people see themselves and their lives.

One thing I’ve noticed is how much social media creates comparison. When you scroll through your feed you’re usually seeing the best parts of people’s lives. Vacations, new clothes, perfect photos, exciting things they are doing. But what we don’t see is everything behind the scenes. Nobody posts the boring days or the stressful moments. So when you are constantly seeing everyone’s highlight reel it can make it feel like everyone else has everything together and you don’t, which obviously isn’t really true.

Another thing is how much people care about likes and comments now. It almost feels like those numbers decide if something is “good” or not. I’ve even seen people delete posts if they don’t get enough likes which is kind of crazy when you think about it. Social media can start to feel like a competition without people even meaning for it to be.

At the same time though social media isn’t all bad. It can actually connect people in ways that weren’t possible before. People can find communities that share the same interests, support each other, and talk about things like mental health or real life struggles. In some ways it has made those conversations more normal which is a good thing.

I think the biggest thing is just remembering that social media isn’t real life. It’s a small version of it. Most people are only posting the best moments and that’s it. Once you remember that it’s a lot easier to not get caught up in the comparison part of it.

Social media can be really fun and useful, but it shouldn’t be the thing that decides how someone feels about themselves.
